Unauthorised taking of money from a debit card.
Reserved a B&B in Blackpool via booking.com using a debit card but paid for it with a CC on arrival.

So far so good.

Checked my account to see the damage done and there is a deduction of £25, rang the place up and was told by a very annoyed proprietor that my mate (honest) had pissed the bed and this is the charge for it.

Can they really take the money without asking of at least giving me the chance to ring him and say put it right?

What if they wanted. 2/3/400 or decided that a new mattress etc was in order?

Not quibbling about the money, I think it’s pretty reasonable and I’ll get it back sooner or later. Just questioning the legality of it.

It's either the price of some Vanish and a minimum wage worker to clean it or the extra charge for the pro he ordered.

Must have something in the T&Cs about charges for damage.should always use a good credit card for these things and use the ‘disputed charge’ route, which I presume you can do with a debit card

Re: Unauthorised taking of money from a debit card.
I'd raise it with the bank - it does seem like a strange amount to take in relation to the alleged damage.

I read a while back that the most widely counterfeit note in Euro circulation was the 20 Euro note - each one not worth the bother/cost of checking so the authorities just let them ride. Same for pound coins here.

Maybe some B&B are playing the same game - lifting small additional amounts from customers assuming that they won't bother chasing it down, but quite prepared to instantly pay it back if questioned so they can keep the scam running.

£25?
Sounds a classy hotel
You imagine for that amount they've washed the sheets
And MAYBE turned the mattress over
All ready for the next lucky reveller

Could have been worst... got 2 MATES that have piss problems... one pissed up went in where he thought the bog was only to find his old man spluttering under a steady stream of stella piss...his Dad was asleep in his bed a few seconds before it.... MATE number 2 regularly pisses up his missus in bed...so much so she now sleeps in spare bed when he goes out for the night

Your lucky really Joe, you got to stay in a B&B in Blackpool where the owner noticed it stank of piss and it wasn’t the normal stink……

I think that if you're in the b&b game lending out beds to random people for cash you are implicitly accepting the risk of someone festooning the bed in piss/shit/spunk/fanny batter and this should be included in the standard rate of the room.

Charging after the fact is a bit cunty I think. Not that any grown adult should be pissing beds but it happens, especially if youre gonna allow the elderly to stay there.

I’d be worried that it wasn’t just piss and that there might have been shit involved

I’d be more worried about him collapsing at the gig than have to fork out 25 quid. Sounds like he has some problems.

£25 is an odd amount. Maybe it's a scam that he tries on all of his pissed up customers. Too little to bother about.

Re: Unauthorised taking of money from a debit card.
The scheme rules which used to apply only to credit cards now also apply to debit cards. This means you can dispute unauthorised transactions and the bank will need to investigate and potentially refund you if the supplier won’t. The dispute can be raised through your bank’s website and the terms generally lean in favour of the customer (you).

However in this instance I suggest you swallow it. Your mates been a twat and if I ran the hotel I’d be charging you way more than that.

Re: Unauthorised taking of money from a debit card.
Stayed at knickerbocker Hotel in NYC just before lockdown started. I like to give myself a week here and there where my family understand I need to go and get off my nut. Satisfies the self destruct I have in me.
Great trip and on the last day or so, I was talking to a mate on phone telling him how good a trip I was having whilst sipping on a lovely bottle of red which was by my feet. Kicked the bottle over accidently and watched it just glug over a white shag pile carpet. By time I noticed it was too late and so i just sat there and watched it empty. Lit up a fag and knew it was gonna cost me a fortune.
Checked out and 4 days later I got hit with a 2990 charge on my card. No warnings, no contact. Was my fault but it was annoying that they didn't tell me or talk to me to come to an agreement.

Jojo.

Fridays intake was 16ish 1664’s and two bottles of wine.

Sats intake was prob more 1664 but no wine. He collapsed/fainted watching the cockney rejects so we left before the show ended.

No idea if it happened on the Friday or the sat night.

Weird thing is, he never seemed that drunk either night.
